Top Tips for Eloping

Hey there, fellow adventurers! If you’re thinking about saying “I do” in the breathtaking landscapes of Northern California, you’re in for a treat. As a documentary elopement photographer with a passion for capturing the magic of this region, AND someone who has actually been in your shoes, I’m here to share my top 10 tips to make your Northern California elopement an unforgettable adventure.

  1. Discover the Perfect Spot: Northern California is a treasure trove of stunning locations. From the towering Redwoods to rugged coastlines, research and choose a spot that resonates with your love story. Maybe it’s a place you both have visited together or have dreamed about seeing? Either way, of course you want your location to be special! I can assist you with location guidance if you were to hire me. *wink, wink*
  2. Check Permits: Many natural areas require permits for ceremonies and photography. Make sure you’re aware of the rules and obtain any necessary permits to keep your adventure hassle-free. Working with me, I’ll take care of this for you!
  3. Dog-Friendly Locations: If your furry friend is part of your journey, ensure your chosen spot allows pets. Northern California has pet-friendly options for your special day. (Again, I can let you know if your location allows pets or not!)
  4. Capture the Moment: Hire a documentary elopement photographer who understands your vision and can preserve the authenticity of your adventure. Look for a photographer with a style and a vibe that resonates with your love story. Feel free to check out my other blog about Why Hire An Elopement Photographer.
  5. Plan Your Timeline: Consider the best time of day for your elopement. Northern California offers diverse lighting and weather conditions, so plan accordingly. This is another aspect I would be able to help you with if you were to hire me for your special day! I do the work so you don’t have to!
  6. Local Vendors: Support local businesses for a personalized experience. Connect with florists, officiants, and other vendors who share your passion for adventure elopements. Having lived in this region for nearly 15 years, I can connect you with the best of the best!
  7. Don’t Skimp on Details: Even in an intimate setting, details matter. Choose meaningful decor, write heartfelt vows, and consider personal touches that reflect your love story. It’s all about the little things, right? And if you’re eloping in the Redwoods, I know you’re like me and care more about experiences and personal touches than you might material things! You’re my people!
  8. Personalize Your Ceremony: Craft a ceremony that truly represents your journey together. Incorporate rituals, readings, or traditions that are meaningful to you. There’s nothing better than adding your own flare. This is YOUR wedding, after all!
  9. Embrace the Unpredictable: Nature can be unpredictable, so have a backup plan for unexpected weather changes. If the weather turns, be flexible and make the most of the moment. It rains a lot in Northern California. Like, a LOT, a lot. And the fog of the Redwood Coast can make any ceremony instantly majestic! On my own wedding day, it poured all morning, was sunny and beautiful for the ceremony and photos, and then poured on our way out! And I LOVED it. It worked out perfectly. Marriage is an adventure, after all! Let’s embrace it while we celebrate your love!
  10. Share Your Story: Don’t forget to share your unique love story with your friends and family. They will be SO grateful that you have beautiful photos documenting your special day. You can even make an event of it! Maybe have an after party inviting all your loved ones, and then throw those gorgeous photos up on a slide show for everyone to see!

Finally, please remember to HAVE FUN! A huge reason folks decide to elope is so they don’t have to deal with the stresses of a large wedding that just ends up taking the focus off the actual couple and the whole reason you’re there to celebrate in the first place.

I know it can seem stressful planning an elopement, but that’s why I’m here to help! Truly. I’d love to take the stress off you so you can focus more on snuggling up with your forever person. Life is too short, hire someone that’s going to take some of the work load off of you. Even if it’s not me! I’d love to be the person to help you, and if we’re a good fit for each other, let’s make it happen! But no matter who it is, you and your partner deserve to relish in this precious time together. Please never lose sight of that.

My hope is that with these tips, your intimate outdoor elopement will be a day you’ll treasure forever. If you’re up for the adventure, reach out via the “get in touch” tab to start planning your unforgettable love story in the great outdoors. Happy eloping! 🌲❤️📷
